Our teachers grew up in Japan. They teach on Zoom, Meet or Teams and have all been trained in the Break Into Japanese method, which gets you talking early, with short questions and plenty of repetition until the sentence comes on its own.
Reading and writing keep pace with speaking. Hiragana first, then katakana, then the kanji you meet in class. A short exercise between sessions is enough to make them stick.
